‘Pumping weights could help you live longer’

The story recommends that Activities which strengthen the muscles - like weightlifting - should be part of an older person's weekly exercise routine.

According to US researchers, people doing both aerobic and muscle exercises were more likely to live longer than those who did just one or the other.

The NHS advises adults over 65 to be physically active every day and do activities to improve strength, balance and flexibility at least twice a week.

It also recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity if you are already active.

Functional fitness

CrossFit incorporates the functional movements that an active person would perform in their day-to-day life. This can include squats, lunges, jumps, pulling movements, and cardio (running, biking, etc.). Functional fitness is proven to improve longevity while maintaining or bettering physical capability.

CrossFit also combines olympic weightlifting movements. Studies suggest that muscle-strengthening exercises make the body leaner and the bones stronger, leading to a healthier life in old age.

Scaling to your abilities

CrossFit is designed to be structured and scaled to match the abilities of the person performing it.  It is how we customise training and workouts for each members’ needs at any given time.

When any new member starts a CrossFit fundamentals course with us we discuss their goals. These can be as simple as wanting to walk up the stairs more efficiently or picking things off the ground without causing back pain. Scaling allows us to help you achieve your goals whatever they may be.

Mixed age community

Regardless of age, working with an experience trainer is beneficial to achieving your goals. We are familiar with the exercises and can guide you towards the safest and most effective methods for performing the various movements.

At CrossFit Bosham we have numerous members in their 60’s and 70’s. CrossFit programming for seniors is common, so our trainers have experience working specifically with older adults.

The community aspect of CrossFit means a higher likelihood that people who take part will enjoy it the more they do it. A study in BMC Geriatrics found that “regular group exercise contributes to balanced health in older adults…and helped them to improve or maintain their functional health and enjoy their lives.”

CrossFit Bosham classes are mixed age and ability and everyone is rooting for each other. It's an opportunity to meet other like minded individuals and be encouraged to achieve your best, by an incredible group of people.
